MY OWN EXPERIENCE
Good Health to you!
I would like to share with you my own experience with chronic migraine headaches.
I am a typical woman, a mother of two boys (23-19
yr old). I've had to live a struggling life since
my childhood years that resulted in migraine headaches
which caused a myriad health conditions later in my
life as well.
I started to have migraine headaches on 1990 when I was 24 yrs old. Back then,
I had no idea what was causing my migraine headaches, but now I do know exactly
what and why I got them. I do remember very well how these attacks started to take place in my life.
The first one occurred with a sensation of weakness in one side of my face,
neck, and arm, as well as tingling feeling of the face and hands which created
confusion. I felt a severe striking pain on my head. It was painful and scary at
the same time! I didn't know what to do and how to deal with this weird feeling of "sickness".
At the beginning, this incident started to happen
once a month and then increased to twice a month for
almost three months until tension headaches started
to hit me almost every week. Pain transformed to become
migraine headaches based on my doctor's diagnoses.
He prescribed medications, however, it all turned
out to be temporary relief. The attacks kept coming
back sooner and stronger!
I do remember the doctor saying: "I'm sorry to tell you that migraine headaches are a recurring problem,
but try to watch out for the reason of what is causing your migraine headaches and try to prevent it."
By that time, I was living an overwhelming stress and a supreme intense depression in this specific
stage of my life where I wasn't able to function or pay close attention to my own health. Medications
didn't work out at all. I started to experience complicated migraine attacks with severe symptoms such
as fatigue, mood changes, increased urination, dizziness, visual disturbances and intolerance to light.
They were often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. There were several occasions where I had to be taken
to the emergency room because of the intolerable pain and nonstop vomiting.
The attacks came with and without aura along with flashing lights, zigzag lines, and temporary
loss of vision. I felt severe tension, throbbing, and pounding in one side of my head from the
temple area to the back of my head. The pain felt like fire, taking over my blood vessels.
Pain started in one area and traveled to another where it became more intense and lasted three
to four days where I had to prison myself into a dark room away from any noise or light struggling
to gain few minutes of sleep with no hope.
Years went by where migraine headaches occupied a big portion of my journey in life with no mercy. A despaired feeling of loneliness accompanied that horrible pain especially when the closest person (my husband) had no idea about this unbearable pain and could not understand the physical and emotional situation I was going through. I had an obligation towards my little ones, however, I found myself in bed with severe pain that was tearing me apart. I empowered myself to stay faithful and hopeful for I believe there must be a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how long it takes! The worst symptoms are when a disturbance of brain function started to develop such as mental fuzziness, speaking confusion, inability to focus on ongoing conversation, temper tantrums, a learning disability, memory impairment, senility, dyslexia, lethargy, and flat emotional response. In addition, more symptoms took place as well such as feeling of heavy chest, anxiety, sleep problems, panic attack, sugar craving, joint pain even eczema showed up. It was completely depressing!
Such overwhelming symptoms led my immune system to weaken which opened me up to myriad of other health conditions such as food and environmental allergies and sensitivities. Miserable! There was no alternative way to ease or eliminate the pain. I realized that every pill had side effects; I experienced this when in some stages of my life I had to take antibiotics and afterward suffered from a weakness and maladies.
I endured this long journey up until six years ago (2002) when a friend of mine opened my eyes to alternative medicine: the functions and the effects of herbs, supplements, vitamins, and minerals. It made total sense to me; it came to my mind how our ancestors always counted on alternative medicine back then since conventional medicine did not exist! I started to do research on what causes my migraine headaches since I believed that behind each cause there is a reason. I looked around and I found a big number of other women that were also suffering from migraine headaches. My curiosity led me to ask them questions about their symptoms and experience which helped me to discover that the cause of their migraine headaches was different than mine.
I exposed myself to all kind of holistic alternatives, health medicine discoveries, researches, resources, studies, opinions, and recommendations. I started to change my life style, follow a new diet plan, and consume herbs and supplements. I EVEN did a study on myself by experiencing so many things trying to find the permanent relief. I started noticing a significant decrease in my migraine headache attacks! Step by step my attacks started to decrease by numbers and shorten by duration. Unbelievable! But it is true!
For four years I was working on puzzle tableau trying to find its lost pieces. I got completely convinced that cure does not come in a form of pill. A holistic approach feeling started to grow in me. I wanted to know more about how our body system works so I can overcome migraine headaches once and for all!
I received a practical oriented education and got certified as a Nutrition Educator (Eating for Health - Digestive Physiology - Macronutrients- Micronutrients - Diet Evaluation -
Diet Planning- Weight Management - Allergy - Immune Support) at Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition and Culinary Arts in Penngrove, California, so I can help women professionally who suffer from migraine headaches to overcome this problem holistically!
If I did it, so you can do it too!
All you need is: Faith, Effort, and Commitment!
